Philosophy of mind monthly report. New project of our Center

15 June, 2018

We are pleased to announce a small project that we are beginning. Our center has decided to publish a monthly, short review of Russian articles on the philosophy of mind. Sometimes we will include broader critical reviews as well.

We hope that, by doing so, we can make readers more aware of what is happening in the philosophy of mind in Russia, and we can thereby stimulate Russian discussion of the problems of consciousness.

Among the most notable Russian publications in the first three months of 2014, we can already identify four articles that are connected with the philosophy of mind:

1. Kuznetsov A. Cognitive investigations and mental causation. //Voprosiy Philosophiy No. 3 Moscow: 2014.
2. Mareeva E. From artificial intelligence to artificial soul. // Voprosiy Philosophiy No. 1 Moscow: 2014.
3. Merzlyakov S. The function of dreams in the context of the “hard problem of consciousness”. // Bulletin of Moscow University. Series 7: philosophy. No 1 Moscow: 2014.
4. Sekatskaya M. Functionalism as a scientific philosophy of mind: why the qualia argument cannot be decisive. // Voprosiy Philosophiy No. 3 Moscow: 2014.

We cannot say that the articles of Mareeva and Merzlyakov have a direct relationship to the philosophy of mind. Nevertheless, the discussion, in these articles, of artificial intelligence in the context of transhumanism and dream analysis allows a new look at the hard problem of consciousness. This new look may be very fruitful for the reader interested in such issues. Moreover, the articles of Kuznetsov and Sekatskaya are directly devoted to the philosophy of mind. As Kuznetsov’s ideas have already been presented on our site, we now offer you a critical review of Sekatskaya’s article “Functionalism as a scientific philosophy of mind : why the qualia argument cannot be decisive”.

We hope that you will like our idea of presenting these reviews and that you will read them regularly.
