“Freedom and resentment”

This session is devoted to one of the most significant articles in the debates on free will and moral responsibility, “Freedom and resentment” by Peter Strawson.

He suggests a kind of normative way to think of moral responsibility. Using this way, we can bypass the discussions of free will and determinism, especially because we don’t know what they are. If we look at why and how we attribute to another person resentment or other kinds of reactive attitudes, we will understand what moral responsibility is, and we can do so without having to deal with the traditional questions about determinism and free will.
