Possible Worlds: Philosophical Heaven and Hell

15 May, 2026

A new episode of Non-Artificial Intelligence has been released, devoted to the metaphysics of possible worlds.

We often speak about what does not exist: about how the world could have been, how it was or will be, or about what has always and everywhere been, is, and will be — even though we only ever deal with what actually exists. Our judgments about reality include elements that are not actually present in it. This concerns both the scope of the laws of nature and our ideas about the possible. The possible-worlds framework is meant to determine what exactly non-actual things and scenarios are, and how the truth of statements about them should be understood. Anton Kuznetsov and Taras Tarasenko discuss this and much else.
