Freedom, Resentment, and the Metaphysics of Morals. Seminar of the Moscow Center For Consciousness Studies

5 January, 2022

The seminar discusses Pamela Hieronymi's book "Freedom, Resentment, and the Metaphysics of Morals", dedicated to the central argument of Sir Peter Strawson's 1962 article "Freedom and Resentment", which had a significant impact on the development of the discussion on the problems of free will and moral responsibility.

According to this argument, since the thesis of determinism is a universal thesis, valid for everyone at all times, its truth does not imply the absence of moral responsibility. This argument, according to Hieronymi, is often underestimated and misunderstood. Hieronymi reveals the shortcomings of its central interpretations and, referring to the works of Strawson on logic, philosophy of language and metaphysics, discovers much stronger grounds for the argument in Strawson's "social naturalism", defending his naturalistic interpretation from possible objections. We will discuss the credibility of this interpretation at our seminar.

The translation of P. Stroson's article, made by Evgeny Loginov, can be read and downloaded here.
