Debating the a priori. Research seminar of Center for Consciousness Studies

16 August, 2024

The book presents the discussion of the authors, which has been conducted by them since 2002 in various speeches and articles. The central topic of discussion is the possibility of a priori knowledge — questions about how knowledge is possible by the powers of reason alone and what exactly can be known in this way.

Along the way, the problems of the boundaries and nature of the mind in general and our human mind in particular, the foundations of logical knowledge and deductive inference, the differences between analytical and synthetic judgments, the conditions of linguistic understanding and competencies, the grasp of concepts and the nature of intuitions, as well as questions about how epistemology and philosophy in general work or should work. The positions of the authors differ on most of these issues, but their goal is not so much to force the opponent to change his point of view, as to present his own research program in the most convincing way and give the reader the opportunity to choose for himself whether to agree with one of these positions or to challenge both. At the seminar we discuss the credibility of the arguments presented by the authors: Evgeny Loginov presents the central ideas of the authors, and Anton Kuznetsov critically examines them; then there goes a discussion. The participants of the discussion: Evgeny Loginov, Artyom Besedin, Artyom Yunusov, Ivan Devyatko, Anna Kostikova, Vadim Vasilyev.
