David Chalmers on virtual worlds. Scientific seminar of the Center for Consciousness Studies

9 January, 2022

At this seminar, the manuscript of a new book about reality and virtual worlds by David Chalmers was discussed.

One of the main theses of the book is that the virtual world is no less real than the real one. Chalmers tries to show this by using the simulation hypothesis, according to which there is a high probability that we live in a simulation. He examines in detail the question of the difference between this hypothesis and classical skeptical arguments like Descartes' "evil genius". This allows Chalmers to solve the problem of the outside world in a new way. In addition to questions of the reality of the viral and external world, the philosopher explores the ontological features of virtual worlds, reflects on what the social structure of such worlds could be, whether ethical principles change in them and what the ethical attitudes of the creators should be. As part of this topic, Chalmers offers a new perspective on the topic of proving the existence of God. Not the last place in the book is occupied by the topic of the meaning of life in virtual worlds and discussions of modern virtual reality technologies, as well as discussions about post-truth and fake news. At the moment, the release date of the book is unknown, as is its final title.
