The seminar is devoted to Jonathan Birch’s book The Edge of Sentience.
By sentience, Birch means sensitivity or valenced conscious experience: a state in which a being does not merely perform cognitive functions, but is capable of pleasure and suffering, and of experiencing its own internal states. Birch proposes a practical framework for deciding how to approach conscious experience in people with brain injuries, animals, neural organoids, and artificial intelligence, despite deep theoretical and worldview disagreements.
