The Edge of Sentience. Research Seminar of the Center for Consciousness Studies

15 May, 2026

The seminar is devoted to Jonathan Birch’s book The Edge of Sentience.

By sentience, Birch means sensitivity or valenced conscious experience: a state in which a being does not merely perform cognitive functions, but is capable of pleasure and suffering, and of experiencing its own internal states. Birch proposes a practical framework for deciding how to approach conscious experience in people with brain injuries, animals, neural organoids, and artificial intelligence, despite deep theoretical and worldview disagreements.

Speakers: Artem Besedin and Anton Kuznetsov

Participants: V. Vasiliev, E. Loginov, A. Mertsalov
