Consciousness and ancient ontologies. Lecture at Science Festival 0+

10 January, 2022

As part of the Nauka 0+ Science Festival, a public lecture "Consciousness and Ancient Ontologies" will be held on October 13 at 16:30. It will be conducted by Anton Kuznetsov, an employee of our Center. Come!

It is generally believed that the problem of consciousness begins with its definition. However, in reality it ends with it, and we want to know not only what it is, but how it is realized by the brain and correlates with brain activity, why some physical systems are able to produce consciousness, and some are not, why it exists at all, why the world is not immersed in "darkness". These questions lead researchers to the idea that the problem of consciousness is fundamental: trying to solve it, we are trying to understand the structure of the Universe, its ontology. Perhaps, having clarified the nature of consciousness, we will have to radically revise our ontological attitudes. That is why the ghosts of ancient ideas about the structure of the world - panpsychism, substantial dualism and hylemorphism, which have been sleeping for centuries, appear on the stage of modern theories of consciousness in a new vestment. In this lecture, we will talk about the problem of consciousness and the causes of the renaissance of ancient ontologies.
