What are we? Scientific seminar of the Center for Consciousness Studies

9 January, 2022

The subject of discussion of this seminar was the book "What are we?" by British philosopher Eric Olson.

Olson believes that the question of personal identity, the main theme of which is the preservation of personality in time, leads to a misconception about what we are in essence. Therefore, he suggests paying attention not to the question of preserving the personality, but to the question of its ontology - what it is. And here Olson takes an animalistic position, believing that a person's personality is a human animal. Many people would have been quick to agree with this position until they discovered that it prohibits the survival of a person in another - not biological - body, prohibits its transfer or loading into a machine. This is exactly what Olson talks about in his lecture "The Metaphysics of Uploading", which he recently read at our invitation in Moscow. A recording of the lecture, an interview, as well as a separate scientific seminar with him will soon appear on the website. Don't miss it!
