Teleport. Philosophy of mind from A to Z

15 June, 2018

If you were destroyed into particles and perfectly reconstructed in another place, would it still be you? This is a case of teleportation. What exactly makes you you? Where does personality live? What provides the continuity of your personality through the time?

Teleportation is a fantastic technology. It enables us to travel long distances through the space. The crucial idea of teleportation is that it destroys a body into particles and send information to another place where the body is reconstituted by particles to particles. But if you were destroyed into particles and perfectly reconstructed in another place, would it still be you? Or there would arise a new person? This is a case of teleportation suggested by philosopher Derek Parfit.

What exactly makes you you? Where does personality live? What provides the continuity of your personality through the time? These are questions about personal identity.

Natalia Kiselnikova and Maria Sekatskaya discussed the issue of personal identity within a mutual project with Postnauka “Philosophy of mind from A to Z”.
