Chinese room. Philosophy of mind from A to Z

15 June, 2018

Chinese Room is the most famous and discussed thought experiment devoted to the possibility of artificial intelligence.

Imagine that artificial intelligence is possible. What is it? First of all it’s a machine based on programs. Program is a set of syntactic rules. These rules simply regroup some sequences of symbols into another. But whether it gives raise to a real intelligence with feelings, emotions etc.? Thought experiment “Chinese Room” of John Searle are aimed to show that it doesn’t. Co-director of our Center Dmitry Volkov and Maria Falikman discussed that experiment within the mutual project with Postnauka “Philosophy of mind from A to Z”.
